Owning a dog is one of the best ways to protect your home or apartment. In a 2017 survey, 50% of convicted robbers said they would avoid robbing a home if there was a big noisy dog. So, with this in mind, what are the best guard dogs?

Today I’m doing a tier list on security dogs. So I’m going to review several breeds, and then determine which one is the Top Dog.

Hi Guys, I’m Doug. I’m a husband, a father of five, and a dog owner. I’ve worked in the security industry for almost 20 years, and now I’m the host for Cove’s YouTube channel.

Without further ado, let’s get into the rankings.

  1. German Shepherd German Shepherds are the go-to breed for police, military, and search-and-rescue work. They are big, strong, and super smart, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds. A German Shepherd can learn lots of commands. They are generally very protective of their owners. Doug ranks this dog: S-Tier!

  2. Doberman The Doberman was invented in the 1890s by a tax collector named Karl Dobermann. His job was carrying cash through rough areas, so he set out to breed a fearless protection dog to walk with him. Dobermans are fast, aggressive, and big. These dogs are loyal and bond with their families. Doug ranks this dog: A-Tier.

  3. Pitbull Pitbulls are known for their strength and high pain tolerance. Generally they are feared by people, because they can be aggressive and brutal. However, they can be very sweet to their families. For security, their tough look alone can make a robber think twice. They do need a good trainer, and they can be mean to other dogs. Doug ranks this dog: A-Tier.

  4. Beagle The Beagle is a small-to-medium dog with one of the best noses on the planet. Originally hunting dogs, they are a good security dog because they bark at EVERYTHING. They're also famously stubborn, and can be hard to train. Doug ranks this dog: C-Tier.

  5. Chihuahua Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the world. Many times they weigh between 2–6 pounds. They sure can yap! Doug ranks this dog: D-Tier.

  6. Pomeranian Pomeranians are also a small breed. They’re very smart and trainable, and they are really puffy. As a security dog, the Pomeranian is more of a warning barker than a bodyguard. It is way too small to fight off a stranger. Doug ranks this dog: D-Tier.

  7. Rottweiler The Rottweiler is a big, strong, powerful dog that was used to guard cattle and pull heavy carts. They can be intimidating, but they are very intelligent and trainable. If they are trained well, Rottweilers can be one of the toughest guard dogs around. They are very loyal dogs. Doug ranks this dog: S-Tier!

  8. Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever is one of the friendliest dogs there is. They are smart, gentle, and they are great with people and other animals. They are very trainable, and were bred as hunting dogs. Doug ranks this dog: B-Tier.

  9. Poodle Poodles are big and fluffy, but they are also really smart. Apparently, they are the second smartest dog breed, behind the Border Collie. They can get really big, but not really that scary. They will bark at intruders. Doug ranks this dog: C-Tier.

  10. Great Dane The Great Dane is the world’s biggest dog. Some are as big as a small horse. They are known as gentle giants because they are really friendly. Seeing this dog would likely scare away any robber. They have a deep, booming bark. Doug ranks this dog: A-Tier.

  11. Wiener Dog The Wiener Dog, also called the Dachshund, has a long body and short little legs. Wiener dogs were bred to chase badgers into their dens. They are brave and stubborn. They have a surprisingly loud bark. Doug ranks this dog: C-Tier.

  12. Shiba Inu The Shiba Inu, or the Doge dog, is a medium sized dog from Japan. They are alert, clever, and independent. They are also very loyal dogs. They were originally bred to hunt small game in the mountains. They are known for a scream-like bark. Doug ranks this dog: A-Tier.

So that’s the tier list for security guard dogs. Which one would you choose?
