Cove Scholarship Winner Plans Creative Ways to Make Communities Safer
Posted August 9, 2023 by Cove

Cove is pleased to announce that it has awarded its 2023–2024 scholarship to Ian Rivera-Rosario. As a junior at Jacksonville University in Florida, Rivera-Rosario is already planning creative ways to use his education to make communities safer. He is double majoring in electrical engineering and music.
When most people think of careers focused on creating a safer community, they tend to think of health professionals, social workers, and law enforcement officers. With this scholarship, Cove hoped to encourage college students of all majors to identify ways to use their education to make their communities safer.
“Anyone can have an impact on their community’s safety,” said Jon Mangum, CEO of Cove. “Students like Ian will be at the forefront of improving the quality of life for many people.”

Cove Scholarship Program applicants were asked to submit an essay that answered: How will you use your education to make your community safer? They were also asked to create a short video that answered: Who is someone who makes you feel safe?
Rivera-Rosario wrote in his essay how his two majors would translate into creating safer communities after graduating.
“As an electrical engineer, I want to create more efficient forms of energy to be able to power more devices that are geared to keeping a public street safe or even a neighborhood with devices such as lamp posts or even emergency posts that help people contact authorities in a pinch,” he said. “I also want to inspire a generation of future engineers and innovators by having community classes teaching how math and sciences can be fun to keep the youth out of trouble.”
He went on to explain that even his music major could help improve community safety.
“As a cellist, I would like to throw concerts small and large to not only bring local communities together but also outside communities to come together through the universal language of music,” Rivera-Rosario said. “I would also like to teach the youth about the world of music either privately or in public seminars that tour around communities that could use some music. I would like to start a community orchestra that brings in not only the youth but also the seasoned musicians to be able to create wonderful music and spread positivity throughout the community, which can increase safety.”
In his video submission, Rivera-Rosario talked about how his dad made him feel safe. “My father has a sixth sense for everything.” He went on to explain that after he’s protected his family, his father then helps everyone feel comfortable by being a bit of a comedian and making everyone laugh.
Congrats to Rivera-Rosario! Cove is proud of your determination to make your community a safer place.
