Home Security Door Sensors Going Off? How to Stop a Beeping Door Alarm Sensor

Home security door sensors are the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your home. They can be easily integrated into your home security and can give you peace of mind that you and your loved ones are protected from possible intruders.

However, a malfunctioning door sensor is not only frustrating, but can compromise your home security system. And the last thing you need to worry about when leaving the house is if your door sensors are functioning properly. It defeats the whole purpose of installing the device in the first place.

Below we discuss what causes a home security door sensor alarm to go off and how to fix a malfunctioning door alarm.

What Causes Door Sensors to Go Off?

Many things can factor into a sensor going off. The first thing you should do is check the device — both the sensor and magnet — to make sure they’re aligned. For instance, over time, the adhesive can lose its strength, causing the device to slip from where it was first installed. If the sensor is aligned, you should next check the battery strength and see if they need to be replaced.

The age of your door sensor can also play a role. Like other home appliances, door sensors have a limited lifespan and if it’s not functioning properly, the door sensor may be reaching the end of its lifespan.

Additionally, environmental factors can set off door sensor alarms. Check the surrounding door area to make sure nothing is blocking the signal, such as dirt or furniture. Movement, such as a strong air current from your vents might cause a faulty alarm.

Same is true for severe weather. Take for instance a severe thunderstorm — strong winds could push your exterior doors open, just enough for the door sensor to become disrupted and go off. It could also impact the adhesive of the sensor and magnet, causing it to lose its grip. This can be easily fixed by adding weather stripping to your exterior doors.

Also make note of other climate factors, such as fluctuation in temperature and/or humidity. All of these environmental factors can cause a door sensor to go off.

If you can’t find the source of why your door sensor is malfunctioning, then you should call your door sensor alarm company or an alarm technician to come take a look. Remember, your system can’t function properly if one of the above factors is making the sensor go off, so the sooner you fix it, the better.

How to Troubleshoot Door Sensors

Before fixing your door sensors, you need to first confirm that there is no threat and that the sensors are in fact sending out a false alarm. Check your security system panel and see what message is showing up. It can tell you if a threat has been detected or give you an error message, such as loss of sensor signal.

Once you’ve verified that there is no intrusion or threat, clean your device and make sure the sensor and magnet are aligned and that they haven’t been altered.

After you’ve cleaned and checked the alignment of your door sensors, reset the door sensor and see if the alarm stops. If the sensors are still going off, try to silence the sensors. If you don’t know how to silence the sensor, pull out the owner’s manual and follow the instructions.

Furthermore, most security systems allow you to silence door sensors on your security panel in the following ways: *Arming the sensor and then immediately disarming the sensor *Disarming the sensor by entering your security code *Pressing the status button

Again, if those methods do not stop the alarm, consult your security system manual or call your security system customer service hotline to get the assistance you need.

It May Be Time to Replace the Door Sensor

If you’re still unable to solve your door sensor woes, then chances are you may have a faulty door sensor and will have to replace it altogether. For the removal process, you’ll first need to deactivate the device from your security panel and then remove it from your door and door frame. Be sure to clean off the excessive adhesive from the wall.

As for the installation process, it varies by the door sensor type. Before you install a new door sensor, be sure to integrate the device into your home’s security system.

Furthermore, when installing a new magnetic door sensor, clean the area where you’ll be installing the device. Next, remove the packaging and adhesive backing of the device and place the door magnet and contact sensor within 2 inches of each other, making sure the two printed semi-circles on the devices align. Once you’ve confirmed that they are aligned, place the sensor on the molding and magnet on the door and hold firmly for 30 seconds.

What if you have decorative door framing? You may find it better to place the door magnet on the molding and the contact sensor on the door. Don’t worry, this will not compromise your door security.

As you can see, there is a lot of trial and error when it comes to fixing your door sensor alarm system. You may have to play around with your security system panel and door sensors to find the solution to the faulty alarm.

Don’t ignore the issue if you have a faulty door sensor. It needs to be fixed in a timely matter, for your sanity and for your home security.
